44% of bread made in the UK never gets eaten. That’s such a shocking waste it inspired Morgan & Elaine Arnell to turn their back on corporate life and do something about it! They created Crumbs Brewing.
Driven by a desire to do something positive to fight the growing problem of food waste and, initially, create a unique brand in their local foodie community they approached their local baker, Chalk Hills in Reigate, to understand more about the issues they experienced with waste.
Unsold loaves were a fact of life for the baker. At best they got given to the local farmer as animal feed, at worst some wholesale customers were putting loaves in black bags and throwing them in the waste.
They developed a range of beers actually brewed using this waste bread. The crumbed unsold bread replaces up to 25% of the malt a beer would normally be brewed with. Each Crumbs beer is brewed using a different type of leftover loaf. That way the style of the beer reflects the character of the delicious bread that makes it.
Since launching, Crumbs have seen excellent growth which has taken them from selling at local markets and festivals to having supplied the likes of Waitrose, John Lewis and Southern Coop and becoming B-Corp certified. They have repurposed over 40,000 loaves from their local baker alone and are already executing plans to take the business to the next level.
