About Sunbird Kitchen ……..
Hi, I’m Fiona, founder, chief cook and boss lady at Sunbird Kitchen.
I make small-batch baked granola blends, overnight oat mixes and granola bars, using organic and gluten free oats.
Granolas are refined sugar free, dairy free and very high in nuts and seeds – completely different to mass produced granola.
My award-winning granola blends are Cashew and Almond, Pecan and Maple, Grain-free and Breakfast Granola.
The overnight oat blends are sugar free – and contain a little dried fruit for added sweetness. They are blended with lots of seeds, spices, and other nutritious ingredients to make them a perfect oaty breakfast.
How did Sunbird start?
During lockdown, I spent my time and energy researching how to launch my own food business. I looked at recipes, the sourcing of raw materials, packaging, websites, everything.
Due to a health condition I was advised to steer clear of gluten, dairy and refined sugar, but I couldn’t find any decent gluten-free and refined sugar-free granola. It all tasted like sawdust and cardboard and was sickly sweet. So that’s where my focus went. Fast forward 5 years – and here I am!
What makes Sunbird products so special?
For the granola, I use Canadian maple syrup, organic coconut sugar or raw honey straight from the beekeeper, who happens to be my mother-in-law. I keep my total sugars below 15% and all but one of my granolas are vegan.
One of my USP’s is that I only use gluten-free, organic oats and keep the nut and seed content of my granola blends high – very different to the granolas available in the supermarkets.
Everything is freshly baked to give it a real freshness. It tastes totally different from mass-produced versions.
As for the overnight oats mixes, their development had been on my radar but things were kickstarted when my supplier sent me a big sack of porridge oats by mistake. I didn’t want to waste them, so started to develop my overnight oat mixes earlier than planned. They come pre-mixed so you just add liquid for instant overnight oats. Surprisingly, these generate as much interest as my granolas.
The granola bars came out of doing food markets, as I needed something people could try on the spot or buy to take away and enjoy. These sell out on market days and customers now order in advance so that they don’t miss out!
